- What exactly does this check?
- One question, put to the engines you tick. Google's AI Overview is ticked to start with and ChatGPT is not, and we only ask the ones you tick. For each engine you choose we report whether your domain is named and which domains are. Every one is a live request, not a lookup in a stored index.
- Why only one question?
- Because every check costs us money at the provider and this page has no account behind it. One question keeps it free to you and bounded for us. Being named for one question on one day is a snapshot, and the number that actually matters is whether you appear in more answers this month than last.
- Does this tell me about ChatGPT?
- Yes, if you tick it. Google's AI Overview answers inside the page load, and ChatGPT is a queued job that follows about a minute later underneath it, which is why it is a choice rather than always on. Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and Claude are not part of the free check. Answer engines disagree with each other constantly, which is why two reads better than one and still is not the whole picture: a signed-in scan asks all 7, and the first 20 questions of a scan reach every one of them.
- Why do you sometimes say the free checks are used up?
- There is a hard daily ceiling on what this page can spend at the provider, claimed in the database before any request goes out. Near the ceiling the ChatGPT half is dropped first, so you may get the Google answer on its own rather than nothing at all. When there is nothing left we stop and say so plainly instead of showing you a fake result. Nothing about that is a judgement on your site.
- Is my domain stored?
- The result is cached for 24 hours against a hash of the domain and topic, so a second person asking the same thing on the same day gets the same answer without costing another provider call. No account is created. We ask for an address only if you want the answer sent to you, and nothing on the page is held back if you would rather not leave one.
