UTM campaign URL builder

Build a tagged campaign URL and see the mistakes that quietly split your reports, capitals, spaces and a missing campaign name, before you ship the link rather than after.

Where the traffic comes from: google, newsletter, partner-blog.

The channel: cpc, email, social, referral. GA4 uses this to group traffic.

The campaign this link belongs to. Strongly recommended, or every link lands in one undifferentiated bucket.

Optional. Ties the link to a campaign ID in your ad platform.

Optional. The paid keyword, for search ads.

Optional. Tells two links in the same email or ad apart.

Your campaign URL

Fill in the page URL, a source and a medium. The link appears here.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us, which matters more here than elsewhere: a campaign URL is often unreleased product news.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS TOOL

Which UTM parameters do I actually need?
Source and medium are the two that GA4 uses to classify a visit, so they are required here. Campaign is optional in the protocol but recommended: without it every tagged link you ever ship reports in one bucket. Term, content and id are for cases where you need to tell two links inside the same campaign apart.
Why does it warn about capital letters?
Because analytics tools treat parameter values as case sensitive. Email and email become two rows in the same report, and the split is silent. The same goes for spaces, which get percent-encoded and then read badly in a report. There is a button that fixes both at once.
What if my URL already has a query string?
It is handled. The URL is parsed properly and the parameters are added to the existing query, so a link like /pricing?plan=pro keeps its own parameter and gains the UTM ones. The same parsing puts UTMs before a #fragment, which is the only position where analytics can read them.
Should I put UTMs on my own internal links?
No. A UTM on an internal link starts a new session in GA4 and overwrites the original source, so the visitor who arrived from your ad is re-attributed to your own footer link. Tag links that arrive from outside your site, and nothing else.
Do UTM parameters hurt SEO?
Not if you use them as intended. They create additional URLs for the same page, which is why the canonical tag on the page should point at the clean version. Google handles this routinely. It becomes a problem only when tagged URLs get linked and indexed at scale.
Is anything sent to your servers?
No. The URL is assembled in your browser. That is worth more than usual here, since a campaign URL frequently names a product or a launch that has not been announced.

A TOOL CHECKS ONCE. SEOBUILDER KEEPS WATCH.

We can watch this for you.

A UTM tells you what happened after someone clicked. It cannot tell you what people searched to find you, or whether an AI answer named you rather than a competitor. That is the part we track.
